SIG et transformations de l’archéologie de l’établissement

Résumé :

Les schèmes d’établissement font partie du corpus de données analysé par les archéologues pour comprendre les sociétés du passé depuis près d’un demi-siècle. L’établissement est en effet considéré comme un indicateur des organisations sociales du passé. L’incorporation récente des systèmes d’information géographique aux méthodes archéologiques a changé les façons dont l’établissement est étudié. Cet article présente les transformations méthodologiques apportées par ces technologies et se questionne sur leurs possibles apports théoriques. Si les méthodes ont bel et bien changé grâce à ces nouveaux outils, ceux-ci ne semblent pas encore bénéficier d’une approche théorique qui leur est propre. Est-ce qu’une approche SIG de l’organisation sociale en archéologie est possible?

Abstract :

Settlement patterns have been used by archaeologists for the last fifty years as data to understand past societies. Settlement is in fact considered as a way to approach social organization in the past. The recent inclusion of Geographic Information Systems in the archaeologist’s toolbox has changed the ways that settlement is analysed. This paper presents the methodological changes brought by these technologies, and seeks to identify if they are responsible for any theoretical developments. If methods have in fact changed with the incorporation of these technologies, no theoretical perspective seems to be attached to them yet. Is a GIS-based approach to social organization possible in archaeology?
